Chapter Eight

Edmund had never linked Brian Bancroft’s parents. Seeing the way the blond, elegantly slim jet-setters looked at Emily, as if she were some piece of street trash, made him like them even less.

“I think that’d be obvious,” Emily replied in answer to Andrea and Whit Bancroft’s question as Mrs. Hamilton ushered in their guests, and then quietly shut the doors behind them. “I’m kissing my husband.”

“We’re not idiots. We witnessed that much,” Andrea Bancroft replied haughtily as she looked askance at Emily’s casual outfit of denim blue stirrup pants and a matching high-necked, tunic sweater emblazoned with Disney characters. Then turned with equal distaste to the Fairfax Farm flannel shirt and cords Edmund wore.

“We were referring to your hasty marriage to this scoundrel who called himself Brian’s friend,” Whit said stiffly.

“Have you taken leave of your senses?” Andrea demanded, looking as elegant and cultured as ever in a red Chanel suit and Gucci boots. “Getting married so swiftly?”

“Come to them, is more like it,” Emily murmured back, with the same daunting lack of politeness.

“It’s not too late to get an annulment, with the right lawyer,” Whit advised.

“I don’t want an annulment,” Emily retorted defiantly.

Nor do I, Edmund thought. “It’s nothing to be ashamed of, dear,” Whit continued. “Everyone will understand you’ve been under tremendous strain.”

Emily sighed and turned her head into Edmund’s shoulder. “Never more so than right now,” she whispered in his ear.

Edmund kept his snug grip about her waist and pressed his lips to her ear. “Want me to take over?”

She stood on tiptoe and murmured, so only he could hear. “Would you?”

“Gladly.” He kissed her earlobe, then turned to their guests.

“I think the real mystery is how you two were able to get here so swiftly,” Edmund said.

“It wasn’t easy,” Whit said, pulling out his pipe.

“We had to deice our jet repeatedly while waiting for clearance to take off, fly into a private airstrip southwest of here, and hitch a ride on two snowplows.”

“But we managed,” Andrea said, taking a seat on the edge of the sofa, “because this is important.”

Whit nodded as he sat beside his wife. “We love our grandson, Emily, and we don’t want to see him brought up as anything but a Bancroft.”

Emily took a seat on the sofa opposite them, as did Edmund. “Bobby will always be Brian’s son. I’ll make sure he always knows his father.”

Andrea shook her head. “It’s more complicated than that.”

“Obviously,” Edmund agreed, “since you were planning to sue Emily for custody of Bobby.”

Shock filtered across Whit and Andrea’s faces. They looked at each other, then back at Emily and Edmund. “How did you—?”

“Does it matter?” Edmund asked abruptly, not about to give them the details on whom, when, where and how Emily had been tipped off about their actions.

“It’s true, isn’t it?” Emily added wearily as she put her hand in Edmund’s and held on tight.

“We’ve made no secret of the fact we want you and Bobby to come and live with us,” Andrea said stiffly.

Emily placed her hand on her heart.
